Reading the Quran Without Sound for the Excused
Is it permissible for someone suffering from inflammation of the vocal cords to read the Quran with their eyes and heart only, without using their tongue, because the air that comes from moving the lips and producing sound exhausts them? And if a woman sits in her prayer area at home until sunrise, does she receive the reward of Hajj and Umrah, or is it a condition to sit in the mosque?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is permissible to read aloud with the tongue or merely to pass over it as much as one is able, and the reward is based on contemplation and reflection, not on pronunciation. A woman should set aside a space in the house, even the size of a prayer rug, which is called a mosque, where she can seclude herself and sit for the purpose of glorification. And God knows best.
