Question
Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to read something from the Quran?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: A menstruating woman is prohibited from reading the Quran just as in the case of ritual impurity, whether it is a verse or less than that, according to Al-Karkhi, and this is chosen by the author of Al-Durr Al-Mukhtar 1: 116, Al-Multaqa p. 4, Al-Maraqi p. 178, Al-Ikhtiyar 1: 21, Al-Kanz p. 7, and others. According to Al-Tahawi, it is permissible to read what is less than a verse, this is if she intends to read. However, if she does not intend to read, for example, if she says, "Thank God for the blessing: Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds," there is no harm in that. It is permissible for her to spell out the Quran and to teach. If a female teacher is menstruating, according to Al-Karkhi, she teaches word by word, pausing between the words, as corrected in Al-Durr Al-Mukhtar 1: 116. According to Al-Tahawi, she teaches half a verse and pauses, then teaches the other half. And God knows best.
