Reading Al-Fatiha at Occasions

Question
Al-Tirmidhi narrated in his Sunan (2857) from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, who said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, nothing was revealed in the Torah, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Psalms, nor in the Criterion like it, and it is seven of the repeated verses and the great Qur'an that I have been given." There is no report from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, or from his companions that they used to recite Al-Fatiha at the time of marriage contracts, or during condolences, or at the time of concluding sales and purchases. If this were good, they would have preceded us to it. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said: "The people of Sunnah and the community say about every action and statement that has not been established from the companions: it is an innovation; because if it were good, they would have preceded us to it, as they did not leave any good trait except that they hastened to it." Is this statement correct?
Answer
I say, and with God's guidance: This statement is questionable and has no basis in truth. There are many actions, such as writing books and building schools, which are unanimously recommended, yet the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions did not engage in them. Therefore, this theory is invalid. Any good deeds and acts of kindness should not be questioned in this manner; rather, we encourage people to participate in them. And God knows best.
