Question
A woman whose co-wife breastfed her husband's nephew with sufficient feedings, in this case, is it permissible for the woman and her daughters not to wear the hijab in front of him since he has become their brother by breastfeeding, or is the prohibition of breastfeeding only applicable to the children of her co-wife?
Answer
I say, and with God's guidance: This "infant" is considered a child of the husband and a brother to the children of his two wives. Therefore, the children of the wet nurse will be siblings by both father and mother through nursing, and as for the second wife, they will be siblings by the father as in blood relations. As the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "What is prohibited by nursing is like what is prohibited by blood relations." Likewise, the wife of the father is prohibited to him because she is his mother through nursing. And God knows best.
