Praying Nafl Behind the Imam in Maghrib
Is it permissible for me to pray Maghrib as Nafl behind someone who is praying it as a Fard, and should I pray three rak'ahs or add an extra rak'ah to make it four?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is permissible to perform voluntary prayer behind him and to add one more rak'ah; so that the voluntary prayer becomes four. It is disliked to perform voluntary prayer behind the Maghrib imam; due to the separation after completing the third rak'ah to come with a fourth. And God knows best.
