Question

My mother entrusted me with a sum of money and stipulated that I should not use it until after her passing — may God prolong her life — and I am to use it for my niece according to her needs. However, my mother unfortunately does not pay zakat on this money, and it is difficult for me to convince her. Is it permissible for me to withdraw from the profits to pay zakat on this money, even though the profits do not cover the amount of zakat, and I cannot withdraw from the original amount?

I say, and with God's help: It is not permissible for you to give zakat on the money without her permission, whether from the profits or from the capital, and you have no option but to advise her regarding zakat. And God knows best.
