Question
Fourteen years ago, my husband and I adopted a girl (I adopted her) because my husband and I are unable to have children. Currently, I do not have money, but my husband, thank God, is financially stable. We said we would take the girl, and my husband would cover her expenses and support her. However, as the girl grows, she needs many requirements, and my husband has started not to provide me with the necessary support for her clothing, food, education, university, and personal matters. Sometimes he gives me some money, but most of the time he does not give me enough for her. I try to provide her with her needs, including education, housing, and a car, and my father gave me a good amount of money, thank God. I pay Zakat on my wealth, so is it permissible for me to give the girl from my Zakat? We have not neglected her, thank God, but I thought of giving her money and saving it to provide her with a good life, as she has no family or anything, so she won't need anyone in the future?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is permissible for you to give your zakat to her; because she is not truly one of your children or descendants, and you will be rewarded by God for taking care of her affairs and looking after her. May God bless you, and God knows best.
