Question
I have an amount of money that Allah has blessed me with to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, and I cannot do it alone now knowing that I have completed (51) years, so I have no opportunity now. I placed the money in a bank, and my husband does not know about it. Is it permissible for me to use the interest to pay off my husband's loan for purchasing a home, knowing that he is late in paying his installments and debts are accumulating on him? Or in other words, can I use the interest from my money to settle my husband's fines, while I do not allow myself or my children to benefit from the interest?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is forbidden for you to place your money in a usurious bank if there is an Islamic bank in your country. You must dispose of the interest you have received by giving it as charity to someone other than your spouse. If you are in a non-Islamic country, it is permissible to place your money in a usurious bank out of necessity, and you must also give this interest as charity. And God knows best.
