Question
I am a participant in the Independent Election Commission for parliamentary elections in Jordan, and I work as a data entry clerk on election day, God willing. We have a preacher who says that participating in parliamentary elections is forbidden, and that my work is forbidden, and the money I will earn from this work is forbidden, and even just casting a vote is forbidden, and any work related to parliamentary or municipal elections is suspect and forbidden. Could you clarify this ruling? And why is it forbidden?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It seems that this preacher is an extremist, and those who hold this ideology are among the most dangerous people to society. Whoever wants to declare something as forbidden must provide evidence for the prohibition; because the default state of things is permissibility, and elections themselves are permissible. And God knows best.
