Question
I am originally from Syria and live in Turkey. The Zakat al-Fitr in Turkish currency is equal to '28' Turkish Lira, and my financial situation is bad with a large family. Is there a lower amount of Zakat, or do I have to pay the full amount for each person in the family, which will be very burdensome due to the poverty we are suffering from?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for everyone who possesses the minimum threshold for the obligation of Zakat, which is "100" grams in excess of essential needs. Therefore, anyone who does not have a surplus of this amount is not required to pay Zakat al-Fitr. And God knows best.
