Question
My niece passed away a month and a half ago. She was not wearing a hijab and may not have been consistent in performing her prayers. She worked in a bank and did not make up the days of Ramadan that she missed without a valid health excuse, but she used to pay a sum of money instead. Is it permissible for a relative to fast on her behalf, as her mother is suffering from kidney disease and her father is elderly and unable to fast?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Whoever dies and has fasting obligations, it is recommended to give charity on their behalf for each day an amount equivalent to half a sa' (a measure of volume). It is not sufficient for someone to fast on their behalf, and God knows best.
