Question

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No one should be punished by fire except the Lord of the Fire." The electric lamp's function is to attract insects to it, and when they approach, it shocks them electrically. It has become common among people to use it in homes, as it kills insects by means of shock, even to the point of burning. Is its use permissible to repel insects? And is its user considered sinful for that?

Answer

I say, and with God's help: These insects are harmful, so it is permissible to kill them in any way possible as long as we do not intend to torture them after capturing them. This is not the case with killing by electric shock, as it may be one of the least torturous methods of killing. And God knows best.
