Question
Is it permissible to use phrases in supplication such as: (by the status of the Prophet), (by the blessing of so-and-so and his deeds from the righteous), (by the blessing of our master Muhammad, peace be upon him), and does this fall into the realm of polytheism, God forbid, may Allah protect us and you; because I heard a hadith from the Prophet, peace be upon him, in which he said: (Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising the son of Mary, for I am only His servant, so say: 'The servant of Allah and His Messenger')?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Seeking intercession through the status of the Prophet, peace be upon him, is recommended by consensus, and any phrase that indicates the status of the Prophet, peace be upon him, is permissible for intercession; because it is in the meaning of status. As for the hadith of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, where the Prophet, peace be upon him, says: "Do not exaggerate in praising me, as the Christians exaggerated in praising the son of Mary, for I am only His servant, so say: 'The servant of Allah and His Messenger'" in Sahih al-Bukhari 4: 147, it has no relevance to the topic of intercession; because it is related to the claim of divinity as the Christians did with Christ, peace be upon him. And Allah knows best.
