Question
A young man works in currency exchange independently, not affiliated with any office or entity. A person gave him an amount of money in shekels to exchange it for Jordanian dinars. This person knows how much the exchanged amount will be because he is aware of the market selling price. However, the young man, with his experience and connections, managed to exchange the amount with an increase of (500) dinars without the owner's knowledge and wants to take (500) dinars as profit for himself. Is this permissible?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: If his work is to exchange for people, and he is known for this, and when someone gave him to exchange for him, he was the person responsible for the exchange and not an agent for the one who wants the exchange, in this case, his profit from the amount of (500) dinars is permissible. If he is not known for the exchange, but rather he is an agent for the owner of the money, then his profit is not permissible; because he is a trustee in providing this service for free, and God knows best.
