Question
What is the ruling on head covering for men during prayer (the imam and the follower), and does this ruling depend on the customs of the country?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is recommended to cover the head if it is customary in their culture to do so. Abdul Halim Al-Laknawi said about praying with a turban: It is disliked to pray without it in regions where the inhabitants are accustomed to not going to the elders without a turban, and they do not leave their homes except while wearing turbans. As for regions where they are not accustomed to this, it is not the case. It has become well-known among the common people that if the imam is not wearing a turban while the followers are, their prayer is disliked. This is also a falsehood with no evidence to support it. Refer to: Nafi' Al-Mufti 37-38, and in "Raising the Confusion" regarding the issues of uncovering heads and wearing shoes in prayer by Al-Kawthari, pages 5-9, which contradicts this. And God knows best.
