Question
My mother constantly insists that I work as a public writer throughout the week, where I draft contracts and certificates for men and women. The nature of my work requires me to deal with a lawyer; she says she needs the money. However, Allah has commanded us to stay at home and not mix with men. Whenever I decide to resign from work, she scolds me, and there is no doubt that she will cut off communication with me if I quit. Is obeying my mother in this case considered forbidden?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is permissible for a woman to work even if there is mixing with men, provided she is in her proper attire and maintains her full decorum to preserve her chastity if she has a need. If she can do without it, it is preferable for her to remain at home. This is not part of obeying the mother, but rather in assessing interests and harms while taking care of the mother in the best possible way. And God knows best.
