Question
I am a woman in my fifties, and I cannot fast. I am overweight and have some illnesses that are not serious and do not prevent me from fasting, but I cannot fast because I am overweight. I cannot bear fasting at all and I cannot do it. I give the expiation for breaking the fast every year. Will my Lord forgive me because I truly cannot bear thirst, hunger, and fatigue?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It appears from your words that you are not among those excused from fasting, so it is obligatory for you to fast, and the expiation is not sufficient for one who is able to fast. Perhaps Allah, the Exalted, will assist you with this fasting to overcome illness and obesity. You must be patient with fasting, unless a trusted doctor advises that fasting is harmful to you, and Allah knows best.
