Question
Regarding a patient with a chronic illness or an elderly person who is unable to fast at all, if they reach a few days of Ramadan and then pass away, should an expiation be given for the days they were alive during Ramadan? And if they had remained alive, they would not have been able to fast, neither as an obligation nor as a makeup?
Answer
I say, by Allah's grace: He must give or recommend giving for the number of days he was alive during Ramadan, if he has enough money for that. The heirs must carry out the will if the amount of the expiation comes from one-third of the estate, and Allah knows best.
