Exchanging Dates for Wheat in Zakat al-Fitr

Question
What is the ruling for someone who gives half a sa' of dates that is equivalent in value to half a sa' of wheat for Zakat al-Fitr?
Answer

I say, and with God's success: It is not permissible; rather, it counts as the dates themselves, and he must complete the remainder by providing another half sa' of dates; because the value is not considered in what is specified, whether what he has given is of the same kind or of a different kind after it has been specified. Rather, the value is only considered in what is not specified. See: Bada'i' al-Sana'i' 2: 72-73, and God knows best.
