Question
What is the evidence for permitting a woman to unveil her face?
Answer
Evidence for uncovering the face:
1. Allah, the Almighty, said: {And let them not display their adornment except that which [ordinarily] appears thereof} [Surah An-Nur: 31]: meaning its places, so kohl is an adornment of the face, and a ring is an adornment of the hand, "Bada'i' As-Sanai'" (6: 2956).
And Al-Qurtubi said regarding the meaning of Allah's statement: {And let them not display their adornment except that which [ordinarily] appears thereof}: people have differed about the extent of what is exempted. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the apparent adornment is clothing, and Ibn Jubair added the face. And Sa'id Ibn Jubair, 'Ata, and Al-Awza'i also said: the face, the two hands, and clothing. Ibn Abbas, Qatadah, and Al-Maswar Ibn Makhramah said: the apparent adornment is kohl, bracelets, henna up to half the forearm, earrings, and the like.
2. It was narrated that Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them) entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while she was wearing thin garments, so he turned away from her and said: "O Asma', when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it is not permissible for her to show anything except this and this," and he pointed to his face and hands. This is in Sunan Abu Dawood 4: 358 from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and it is a mursal narration.
3. It is narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: "When a woman reaches the age of maturity, it is not permissible for her to show anything except her face, and what is below this," and he grasped his arm, leaving a space between his grasp and his hand like another grasp. This was reported by Al-Tabari in his Tafsir 18: 119 from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj as a mursal narration.
4. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Al-Fadl was riding behind the Prophet (peace be upon him), and a woman from Khuza'a came, and Al-Fadl kept looking at her and she kept looking at him, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side." This is agreed upon, so he commanded Al-Fadl to lower his gaze, but he did not command her to cover her face, and Allah knows best.
