Question
What are the etiquettes of returning from visiting the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him?
Answer
When he finishes visiting the Master of the Prophets and the great shrines and intends to return to his homeland, it is recommended for him to bid farewell to the Prophet's Mosque (peace be upon him) with a prayer instead of the farewell Tawaf from Mecca. He should pray in the Rawdah if possible, and supplicate with what he wishes, asking Allah the Almighty for acceptance and safe return to his family, free from the trials of both worlds. Then he says: "O Allah, do not make this the last time I visit Your Prophet and his mosque and sanctuary. Make it easy for me to return to him and to stay close to him, and grant me forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter, and bring us back to our families safe and sound. Amen, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful." He should strive to shed tears from his eyes, as it is a sign of acceptance. Then he departs, weeping and lamenting the separation from the noble presence and the magnificent relics. It is appropriate for him to give charity as much as he can, and to supplicate on his return: "Glory be to Him who has made this subservient to us, and we were not capable of it, and indeed, we are returning to our Lord. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and for actions that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are the companion in travel and the guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, the sadness of sights, and the bad return in wealth and family. We are returning, repenting, worshiping our Lord, and praising Him." [In Sahih Muslim 2: 978, and Sunan Abu Dawood 3: 33]. He should inform his family of the time of his arrival, and it is preferable to enter his town during the day. When he enters his town, he should start with the mosque as the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do, and pray two rak'ahs as a greeting for the mosque if it is not a time of dislike. When he enters his family, he says: "Repentance, repentance – meaning returning – to our Lord, a return that leaves no sin upon us." Then he enters his private house and prays two rak'ahs there; to make the musk the conclusion, and the return complete. He thanks Allah the Almighty for what He has granted him in completing the worship and returning safely. Then it is recommended that he visits the dearest of his family to him if they are present; because he (peace be upon him) would, after entering the mosque and praying in it and exiting from it, begin by visiting Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her) before visiting his other wives. He should strive to increase the goodness of his noble character for the rest of his life, and his goodness should increase after his return. For a sign of an accepted Umrah and a blessed visit to the best of those visited (peace be upon him) is that he returns better than he was in all matters. If he sees in himself a distance from falsehood and involvement in misguidance and a desire to avoid the abode of delusion and to turn to the abode of eternity and the proximity of the Worshipped One, he should be cautious not to tarnish that by seeking more of this world and abandoning contentment with what suffices him and aids him in obedience from the provisions of the Hereafter.
