Eating Mistakenly During Nafl Fasting

Question
A man intended to fast a Nafl (voluntary) fast and after the time of true dawn entered, he drank and ate thinking that dawn had not yet broken. Afterward, he discovered the truth. Is his ruling the same as that of Ramadan fasting, meaning he should refrain for the rest of the day and make up another day later, or is there a different ruling?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Your fast is invalid and you must make up for it due to the mistake in it, and you are not required to abstain for the rest of the day, and God knows best.
