Question
What is the ruling on drinking from gold and silver vessels or using them?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is strictly forbidden to drink from gold and silver utensils and to use them; due to the explicit prohibition from the Prophet, peace be upon him, regarding this. From Umm Salama, may God be pleased with her, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, the one who drinks from a silver utensil is only gargling in his stomach the fire of Hell" in Sahih Bukhari 5: 2133, and Sahih Muslim 3: 1634. The Prophet, peace be upon him, also said: "Do not wear silk or brocade, nor drink from gold and silver utensils, nor eat from their dishes, for they are for them in this world" in Sahih Muslim 3: 1638, and Sahih Bukhari 5: 2069. If this is established for drinking and eating, it is likewise for using perfumes and others; because it is similar in usage, and what is mentioned for them applies to what is similar in meaning; and because it is a luxury enjoyed by the affluent, as mentioned in Al-Taybin 6: 12, Al-Sharnubalali 1: 310, and Radd al-Muhtar 6: 341, and Talabat al-Talabah p. 20. And God knows best.
