Divorce Under Duress
My mother forced my brother to divorce his wife, and he divorced her under his mother's coercion; because she told him that if he didn't divorce her, she would be angry with him for the rest of her life and would leave the house. He divorced her while he loves her, knowing that he has divorced her twice. Did the divorce take place?
Answer
I say, and with God's guidance: This is not coercion; because coercion is what one fears will lead to the loss of life or limb. Divorce in this manner is valid, and he is sinful if he divorces her without a legitimate reason according to Islamic law, provided she is not being harmful to him, his mother, or his family. He can honor his mother without harming his wife, and God knows best.
