Question
A doctor works in a government hospital and is facing a shortage of medicines and equipment for the hospital. Is it possible to disburse financial Zakat for this hospital, or must it only be in cash for the needy?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The purpose of zakat is to transfer ownership to the poor, and a hospital is not a recipient of zakat. Zakat can be given in cash or in kind, whichever is more suitable for the poor, and God knows best.
