Question
I loved someone, and I knew that love is forbidden, so I left him. Is marriage to a specific person destined and written by Allah the Exalted?
Answer
I say, and with God's guidance: Love in itself is not forbidden; rather, it is the essence of our lives. However, love can only be realized through knowledge and experience of the person, which usually occurs after a period of marriage when each spouse becomes familiar with the qualities and morals of the other. What precedes marriage is more akin to admiration for certain traits or appearances, which quickly fades away, unlike what is portrayed in series and songs. Therefore, it can lead to the commission of immoral acts and sins. Each of us should reserve these emotions for our future spouse and not spend them in ways that anger Allah, the Almighty. Everything is predetermined in His knowledge, including marriage, drink, and food. If Allah did not know everything, He would not deserve to be worshipped as a God at all. And Allah knows best.
