Dealing with Found Items and Benefiting from Them
If someone finds a pair of headphones on public transportation and takes them, what should they do with them? Is it permissible for them to use them or sell them and benefit from the money?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: He should not take it and give it to the driver in case its owner returns. If there is no means to return it to its owner, he should give it as charity on behalf of its owner to a poor person. If it is a poor person, he can take it as charity on behalf of its owner, and God knows best.
