Question
What is the ruling on cutting hair and trimming nails for those who want to sacrifice in Dhul-Hijjah?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: According to the majority, it is not forbidden to cut hair and nails in Dhul-Hijjah for those who wish to offer a sacrifice; because the hadiths of prohibition, such as the hadith of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When you see the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah, and one of you wants to offer a sacrifice, let him refrain from cutting his hair and nails" in Sahih Muslim 3: 1565, are abrogated or interpreted as recommending against it and contrary to what is preferable; due to the established hadiths that indicate permissibility: like the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "I braided the sacrificial camels of the Prophet (peace be upon him), then he adorned them and I adorned them, or I adorned them and then sent them to the house, and he stayed in Medina, so nothing was forbidden for him that was permissible" in Sahih Bukhari 2: 169, and Sahih Muslim 957. The jurists differed in reconciling between them, and in interpreting the second hadith. The Hanafis held that cutting is permissible and that doing so is contrary to what is preferable, while the Malikis and Shafi'is held that it is recommended not to cut and that it is disliked in a way that is merely a disapproval. The Hanbalis alone held that cutting is forbidden. Therefore, it is advisable not to be strict with Muslims in such matters, and Allah knows best.
