Condition of Zakat on Wealth

Question
The wife's family owns a house, and the husband also owns another house through bank loans. A large portion of their salary goes towards those loans in addition to education and university fees, and they also have a piece of inherited land. Is Zakat on wealth obligatory for them, knowing that they are asking for it due to financial hardship?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Zakat is valid for those who do not own surplus beyond their essential needs, such as a house, a car, furniture, and others, amounting to the nisab, which is (100) grams of gold. Even if they have another car, another apartment, or land, and they own land, they are not considered poor; thus, it is not valid to give them zakat. And God knows best.
