Question
We live in a non-Islamic country that does not adhere to Islamic laws. We are required to obtain insurance for cars, some of which is mandatory and some is not. However, not obtaining the non-mandatory insurance could lead to significant damages for us in the event of an accident, as the courts rule according to the laws of the state. What is the ruling in this case?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Insurance is permissible as long as it does not contain any legal prohibitions. What the insurance company takes is considered a guarantee, and the company guarantees the damage that occurs to the car in the event of an accident. Therefore, insurance is legally permissible, and there is no legal objection to it whether it is mandatory or optional. And God knows best.
