Calculating Food Costs from Zakat
A company wants to give its zakat and intends to do so by providing food for the poor. Preparing this food incurs costs such as the wages of cooks, transportation, and others. Is it possible to account for these expenses from the zakat funds?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It can be calculated from the zakat as follows: If we calculate all the expenses for transportation, cooking, and others for one meal for the poor, and the value of the meal is, for example, (5) dollars, then the zakat is calculated based on the number of meals and distributed to the poor, and God knows best.
