Association of the Deceased's Name with His Mother's Name

Question
It has become customary to pray for the deceased and say 'to the soul of so-and-so, son of so-and-so' without mentioning the father. Is this action permissible?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Her saying does not harm by attributing it to her mother, but it is preferable that the attribution be to the father. Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The traitor will have a banner raised for him on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said: This is the treachery of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so" in Sahih al-Bukhari 8: 41, and Allah knows best.
