Animals Subject to Zakat

Question
What are the types of animals that are subject to zakat?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Zakat is only obligatory on three types of animals: sheep, cattle, and camels. As for other types, zakat is not obligatory on them by themselves, unless they are goods for trade, in which case the condition of growth in trade goods is required, which is the intention of trade. It is also required for zakat to be obligatory on them that they are grazing; grazing refers to those that suffice with grazing or graze for most of the year, and it is intended for those that are grazed for milk and offspring. If they are grazed for carrying and riding, there is no zakat on them. If they are fed for the entire year or half the year, they are not considered grazing; because the criterion is based on most of the year, thus they would have the zakat of traders, not the zakat of grazing animals. Similarly, if they are grazed for sale and trade, they have the zakat of traders, not the zakat of grazing animals; because they differ in amount and reason, so one cannot be considered as the other, nor can the year of one be based on the year of the other. And God knows best.
