Question
My fiancé smokes, but only a little; sometimes he quits and sometimes he goes back to it. What advice should I give him, or what approach should I take to help him quit? Also, on some days he does not attend Friday prayers due to his work in agriculture. What should I advise him so that he does not neglect his prayers? Is smoking and missing Friday prayers a reason for me to leave him, or should I be patient and pray for him, not leave him, and guide him towards God Almighty? Will I have a reward from God if I stay with him?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is better for you to be patient with him, to be affectionate towards him, and to urge him to abandon the sin of smoking and to commit fully to prayer. This can be done by explaining how I can live with a man who finds comfort in smoking and similar habits. As for prayer, it involves bringing him closer to religion and making it dear to him, as it is the path to salvation. And whoever fears God, He will provide for him from where he does not expect. We want our sustenance to be lawful, and this cannot be achieved by neglecting prayer. And God knows best.
