A wife does not give her zakat to her husband

Question
Is there an authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that permits a wife to give her zakat to her husband?
Answer

I say, and with Allah's success: It was narrated from Zainab, the wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “I was in the mosque and saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he said: ‘Give charity, even if it is from your jewelry.’ Zainab used to spend on Abdullah and the orphans in her care. She said to Abdullah: ‘Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) if it is sufficient for me to spend on you and the orphans in my care as charity?’ He said: ‘You should ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).’ So she went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and found a woman from the Ansar at the door with a need like hers. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by us, and we said: ‘Ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) if it is sufficient for me to spend on my husband and the orphans in my care,’ and we said: ‘Do not tell him about us.’ He entered and asked him, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Who are they?’ He said: ‘Zainab.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Which Zainab?’ He said: ‘The wife of Abdullah.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Yes, she has two rewards: the reward for kinship and the reward for charity.’” This is in Sahih al-Bukhari 2: 533. This hadith was adopted by the two companions of the Hanafi school, who said: A wife can give her zakat to her poor husband because she is not obligated to provide for him. Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A wife should not give her zakat to her husband due to the interconnection of benefits between them, and he interpreted this hadith as referring to voluntary charity, not obligatory zakat. His opinion is the relied-upon view among the Hanafis, and Allah knows best.
