A Hadith: A Muslim is not to be killed for a disbeliever

Question
Hadith: 'A Muslim is not to be killed for a disbeliever, nor is one under a covenant to be killed for his covenant.' How did the esteemed Hanafi scholars understand this?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: A Muslim should not kill a non-Muslim who is under protection, nor should a dhimmi (protected non-Muslim) kill a protected person, and God knows best.
