The Water That Exits the Human Body

Question
What are the types of water that exit the human body and what is the difference between them in terms of description and ruling?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: The fluids that exit from a person are three: First: Al-Mani (semen): This is general and includes the fluid of both man and woman, and it has characteristics by which it is recognized, which are: its smell is like the smell of fresh date blossoms, and like the smell of dried eggs; it is thick and white, and it breaks from the male. As for the female, it is thin and yellow, exiting with desire and with a feeling of relaxation afterward, and it comes out in spurts. It necessitates a full ablution (ghusl). Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was a man who experienced pre-ejaculation (madhi), so I would wash myself in winter until my back cracked, and I mentioned that to the Prophet (peace be upon him) or it was mentioned to him. He said to me: 'Do not do that. If you see the pre-ejaculate, wash your private part and perform ablution for prayer. If you ejaculate water, then perform a full wash (ghusl)." This is found in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 1: 15, Sahih Ibn Hibban 3: 385, Sunan Abu Dawood 1: 53, and Al-Mujtaba 1: 111. And Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was a man who experienced pre-ejaculation, and I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him). He said: 'If you ejaculate (hadhaf) — and hadhaf means to throw, and it can only be in this manner if there is desire — then perform a full wash (ghusl) for major impurity (janabah), and if you did not ejaculate, do not wash.'" This is found in Musnad Ahmad 1: 107. Al-Tahanawi said in I'la al-Sunan 1: 186: "All of its narrators are trustworthy except for Jawaban, who is truthful but was accused of heresy, so the chain is acceptable." And Mujahid reported that a man asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whenever I urinate, a flowing water follows me that is from which a child is born..." He said: "Do you find desire in your heart?" He said: "No." He said: "Do you feel numbness in your body?" He said: "No." He said: "This is merely a discharge that requires only ablution from you." This was narrated by Al-Hakim in his history, and its chain is good. See: I'la al-Sunan 1: 189, and Radd al-Muhtar 1: 107, 'Umdat al-Ri'ayah 1: 81, Al-Labab 1: 16, and Talabat al-Talabah p. 18. Second: Al-Madhi (pre-ejaculate): This is the thin fluid that comes out during weak desire through play and similar acts without ejaculation, and it necessitates ablution but not a full wash; for Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was a man who experienced pre-ejaculation, so I would wash myself in winter until my back cracked, and I mentioned that to the Prophet (peace be upon him) or it was mentioned to him. See: Radd al-Muhtar 1: 107, 'Umdat al-Ri'ayah 1: 81, Al-Labab 1: 16, and Talabat al-Talabah p. 18. Third: Al-Wadi (post-urination discharge): This is a thick white fluid that has no smell, which comes out after urination, and it necessitates ablution but not a full wash; because it follows urination and necessitates ablution due to being impure. Mujahid reported that a man asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whenever I urinate, a flowing water follows me that is from which a child is born..." He said: "Do you find desire in your heart?" He said: "No." He said: "Do you feel numbness in your body?" He said: "No." He said: "This is merely a discharge that requires only ablution from you." See: Radd al-Muhtar 1: 107, and 'Umdat al-Ri'ayah 1: 81, Al-Labab 1: 16, and Talabat al-Talabah p. 18, and Allah knows best.
