The Separation Between Adhan and Iqama

Question
Is it necessary to separate between the Adhan and Iqama?
Answer
It is recommended to separate the call to prayer (adhan) from the iqamah except for the Maghrib prayer; because the notification required from each of them cannot be achieved without separation; and because the adhan is for summoning the absent, so there must be a delay for them to arrive. The separation can be done by performing a prayer or by sitting, and the amount of separation between them is: for Fajr, the time it takes to recite twenty verses, for Dhuhr, the time it takes to pray four rak'ahs, reciting about ten verses in each rak'ah, for Asr, the time it takes to pray two rak'ahs, reciting about ten verses in each rak'ah, for Maghrib, the time it takes to recite three verses, and for Isha, as in Dhuhr. This is not a strict measure, so it is preferable to do what allows the people to gather while considering the recommended time. See: Opening the Door of Care 1: 202.
