Question
How do we respond to those who say that verbalizing intention is considered an innovation?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Pronouncing the intention is not an innovation but is recommended; because our greatest Prophet, peace be upon him, pronounced the intention during his pilgrimage and Umrah, which are acts of worship. Likewise, we pronounce the intention in other acts of worship in emulation of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him; and because pronouncing it helps in bringing the intention to mind until the worship is invalidated. Additionally, people's hearts have become preoccupied with worldly matters, so pronouncing it with the tongue reminds the heart, and God knows best.
