The Ruling on Conditional Divorce

Question
After a big argument, the husband said to his wife: 'If you go to your mother's house or if your mother visits you, you are divorced.' The wife did not go to visit her mother, and her mother also did not come to visit her. A year has passed, and now the husband is very regretful. What should he do?
Answer

I say, and with God's success, if the husband wants to prevent her from going now, for example, or for a certain period, then what he wanted has been achieved by her not going for a year, so the divorce does not occur if she goes now. If he wants to prevent her completely and forever from going, then the divorce will take effect. The husband should consult the mufti directly so that the situation is understood for his fatwa, and he receives a precise answer that aligns with his case, and God knows best.
