Answer
First: Wudu linguistically: from "wada'a" which means cleanliness, beauty, and purity. From it is the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "The blessing of food is wudu before it and wudu after it," in Jami' at-Tirmidhi 4: 281, Al-Mustadrak 3: 699, Sunan Abu Dawood 3: 345, and Musnad Ahmad 5: 441: meaning the linguistic wudu which is washing. Refer to Talabat al-Talib 4-5. Second: Wudu legally: it is washing and wiping on specific body parts; as stated by Allah, the Exalted: (O you who have believed, when you rise to pray, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and your feet to the ankles...) Surah Al-Ma'idah: 6; as He commanded to wash the three parts – the face, the hands, and the feet – and to wipe the head. Washing: is the flow of liquid over the place. Wiping: is touching. Refer to Al-Ikhtiyar 1: 12, Al-Bada'i 1: 3, Hashiyat 'Isaam al-Din Q6/A, and Fath Bab al-'Inayah 1: 41.
