Ruling on Zakat for Ornamental Gold
Is zakat obligatory on ornamental gold? Is zakat required every year or just once in a lifetime? I used to think that there is no zakat on ornamental gold, so if I wanted to pay zakat for the past 20 years, I would have nothing left of my money. Is this correct?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: This is a controversial issue among scholars, and the opinion given in the Hanafi school is that it is obligatory every year if the gold reaches a weight of one hundred grams. If it reaches this weight, zakat is due on it, and you are not required to pay for previous years due to the disagreement on this issue. And God knows best.
