Question
A teacher's husband stole items from several shops and does not know their value. If he donates an amount greater than the value, is that sufficient since he cannot go to the shops and say that he is a thief? What should he do? Note that he has repented, prays now, and gives charity?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: He must return the right to its owners as long as they are present, and seek an appropriate way to return it even without informing them. If he is unable, he must inform them and return it to them in a manner he sees fit, and God knows best.
