Question
What is the ruling on repeating the wiping of the head with one water?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is permissible to repeat wiping the head with the same water, and this is supported by what was narrated from Shuqayq ibn Salamah who said: "I saw Uthman ibn Affan, may God be pleased with him, wash his arms three times and wipe his head three times, then he said: I saw the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) do this," as mentioned in Sunan Abu Dawood 1/75. This is recommended according to what was narrated in "Al-Mujarrad" from Abu Hanifah. In contrast, repeating the wiping of the head with different waters is an innovation; because it becomes a washing, or something close to it, so it is not recommended to repeat it three times like in tayammum, unlike washing; because repetition validates it. See: Tabyeen al-Haqaiq 1: 5. And Al-Mukhtar 1: 82, and God knows best.
