Question
What are the properties of semen that require ghusl?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Semen is general and includes the fluid of both man and woman, and it has characteristics by which it is known, which are: its smell is like the smell of fresh date flowers, and the smell of dried eggs; it is thick and white, and it breaks off from the male. As for the female, it is thin and yellow, it comes out with desire followed by fatigue, and it comes out in spurts. It necessitates a full wash; as Ali (may God be pleased with him) said: "I was a man who experienced pre-seminal fluid, and I used to wash myself in winter until my back cracked, so I mentioned that to the Prophet (peace be upon him) or it was mentioned to him. He said to me: Do not do that; if you see the pre-seminal fluid, wash your private parts and perform ablution for prayer, and when you have washed with water, then take a full wash," in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 1: 15, and Sahih Ibn Hibban 3: 385, and Sunan Abu Dawood 1: 53, and Al-Mujtaba 1: 111. And Ali (may God be pleased with him) said: "I was a man who experienced pre-seminal fluid, so I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he said: If you ejaculate — ejaculation is throwing, and it cannot be in this manner except with desire — then wash from the major impurity, and if you did not ejaculate, do not wash," in Musnad Ahmad 1: 107. And Al-Tahanawi said in I'laa al-Sunan 1: 186: All of its narrators are trustworthy except for Jawab, for he is truthful but was accused of Irja, so the chain is acceptable. And from Mujahid, a man asked Ibn Abbas (may God be pleased with them): "Whenever I urinate, the flowing water that comes from me is like that which produces a child... He said: Do you feel desire in your heart? He said: No. He said: Do you feel numbness in your body? He said: No. He said: This is merely a coldness, and you are excused with ablution from it," narrated by Al-Hakim in his history, and its chain is good. And see: I'laa al-Sunan 1: 189, Rad al-Muhtar 1: 107, Umdat al-Ri'ayah 1: 81, Al-Labab 1: 16, and Talabat al-Talabah p. 18, and God knows best.
