I say, and with God's help: It is not valid to pay zakat on behalf of someone else; because it is an act of worship and there must be intention for the zakat, then permission to pay on their behalf. Not knowing does not serve as an excuse; rather, one must learn the jurisprudence of zakat, otherwise they will be sinful. And God knows best.
