Question
My husband has money and has reached the nisab, but he does not know that he must pay Zakat on the money. Can I pay Zakat on his behalf without him knowing, but I intend this as Zakat for my husband's money? I told him: The money you have, you must pay Zakat on it, and he said: No, there is no Zakat on it?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is not valid to pay zakat on behalf of someone else; because it is an act of worship and there must be intention for the zakat, then permission to pay on their behalf. Not knowing does not serve as an excuse; rather, one must learn the jurisprudence of zakat, otherwise they will be sinful. And God knows best.
