Question
If I have set aside the amount of obligatory zakat due on me, do I need a new intention when giving to each poor person?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: There is no need for a new intention when giving to each poor person, and it is valid to pay zakat with an intention that is concurrent or for the purpose of separating the amount of zakat; because zakat is an act of worship and is not valid without intention, and the original principle is that it is coupled with performance, like other acts of worship. However, if the payment is distributed, it is not required to have the intention present at each payment, as long as the intention was made at the time of separation, thus sufficing with its existence at the time of separation to avoid hardship; because separation is an action of the person, so the intention is permissible at that time. As mentioned in Al-Mishkat, p. 309, and God knows best.
