I say, and with God's success: Fasting in voluntary i'tikaf is not a condition, for the condition is one of the two pillars of fasting itself, which is abstaining from sexual relations; as He, exalted be His glory, said: {And do not approach them while you are in i'tikaf in the mosques} (Al-Baqarah: 187). As for abstaining from eating and drinking, it is not a condition; because voluntary i'tikaf is not specified, and it is equal whether it is little or much, even for an hour. Fasting is specified by a day; as fasting part of the day is not legislated, so it cannot be a condition for something that is not specified. Refer to: Bada'i' al-Sana'i' 1: 310, and God knows best.
