Question
What are the conditions for the validity of Tayammum?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: There are eight conditions: The first condition: Intention: This means that one must intend a specific act of worship that is not valid without purification, such as the prostration of gratitude and the prostration of recitation, or one must intend to permit prayer, or intend purification from minor or major impurity. The second condition: Inability to find enough water for purification: So if a person in a state of major impurity has enough water for ablution but not for full washing, then they should perform dry ablution (tayammum), and they are not required to perform ablution initially. However, if there is a minor impurity that requires ablution, then they must perform ablution and dry ablution. The third condition: The surface to be struck must be of the same type as the earth, according to the correct opinion: For the surface to be struck in dry ablution, there are two types: The first: of the same type as the earth: such as dust, sand, stones, and kohl, this type is permissible for dry ablution without dust; because what is considered in dry ablution is contact, as evidenced by the fact that if one shakes it, the dust on it scatters. The second: not of the same type as the earth: which is anything that burns in fire and turns to ash: such as trees, grass, or anything that melts and softens: like iron, copper, gold, glass, and similar items, or anything that the earth consumes: like wheat, barley, and other grains, this type is not permissible for dry ablution without dust. The fourth condition: The surface to be struck must be pure: and the requirement for purity is because it is what is meant by "pure" in the Almighty's saying: {So perform dry ablution with pure earth} (An-Nisa: 43), meaning pure earth, so it is not permissible to use a place where there was impurity even if the trace has been removed, although it is permissible to pray there. Refer to: Sharh Al-Waqaya p. 107. The fifth condition: It must be with three fingers or more: This condition applies if one wipes with their hand, then they must wipe with more than that, and the minimum is three fingers. However, if they rub the dust with the intention of dry ablution and the dust touches their face and hands, it suffices them. The sixth condition: Searching for water if one thinks it is nearby: They must search for it for a distance of a "ghalwah" - approximately 150 meters - if they think it is close; otherwise, it is not required. The method of searching is to look to their right, left, in front of them, and behind them for a "ghalwah"; they are not required to walk, but it is sufficient to look in these directions while remaining in place, provided that there is nothing obstructing their view. However, if there is a small mountain nearby, they should climb it and look around, as long as they do not fear harm. The seventh condition: The cessation of anything that contradicts it, such as menstruation, postpartum bleeding, or any impurity: as is the condition for ablution and washing. The eighth condition: The removal of anything that prevents wiping on the skin: such as wax and fat; as they prevent complete contact. Refer to: Sharh Al-Waqaya p. 107-108, Al-Hadiyya Al-Alaiyya p. 33, and Umdat Al-Ri'aya 1: 99, and God knows best.
