Question
Is it authentic that the Prophet, peace be upon him, drank from the leftover of his ablution while standing?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: About Ali : "He prayed the noon prayer, then sat to attend to the needs of the people in the courtyard of Kufa until the time for the afternoon prayer came. Then water was brought to him, and he drank and washed his face and hands -- and he mentioned: his head and feet -- then he stood up and drank the remainder while standing, and then said that some people dislike drinking while standing, and that the Prophet did like what I did," in Sahih al-Bukhari 5: 2130. It is among the etiquettes of ablution to drink some of the leftover water while standing, facing the Qibla. It is said that one should not drink water while standing except in two places: the first is this, and the second is at Zamzam. See: Tabyeen al-Haqaiq 1: 6-7, Majma' al-Anhar 1: 16, and Bada'i' al-Sana'i' 1: 23-24, and God knows best.
